Production reds are a breed developed for the purpose of efficient production of large brown eggs. Production Reds are sometimes called "cherry eggers" produce the largest eggs of any of the dual purpose brown egg breeds and crosses. Mature hens weigh only about 5 pounds and because of this small body size do not produce a large amount of fowl meat following their use as laying hens.
