Roens are docile birds that are valued for their meat.  They are poor layers, but they make fine roasting ducks and have and abundance of delicately flavored flesh.  This unsurpassed gourmet quality comes at a price, though, as Roen ducks are slow to mature (6-8 months).

Mallards are native to most countries in the Northern Hemispheres.  The Mallard is a small duck that can fly quite well and is hunted widely.   They are poor layers, but do an excellent job of hatching and raising their own.

The Khaki Campbell is one of the more famous and popular duck breeds due to its excellent egg production.  It was introduced in 1901 by Mrs. Adele Campbell of Gloucestershire, England.  She experimented with Runners crossed with Rouen and Mallards, but never revealed the exact genetic makeup of her Campbells.  The advantage over the pure Runner was a more  useful carcass for meat and egg production.

In 1996 Metzer Farms Developed the Golden 300 Hybrid.  This hybrid duck lays more eggs, has a higher fertility rate and are calmer than the Khaki Campbell.  The breed was developed by crossing and utilizing the attributes of different duck breeds.

Probably the largest Pekin you can get.  For exhibition they are excellent for Meat Pens, but do not have the the special conformation necessary for show Pekins.  They have been bred for size and meat production, not the standards of the show Pekins.  The males can reach up to 11 lbs and females to 9.5 lbs in a few short months.

The Cayuga breed is thought to have developed from the wild Black Duck breed in the region of Lake Cayuga in New York.  This makes it one of the few duck breeds originating in the United States.  Prior to the arrival of the Pekin Breed, they were the bird of choice for meat production in the Northeast.  They remain a very hardy duck.

The Buff Orpington was developed by William Cook family in the early 1900s. It has the ability to lay good quantities of eggs along with size and feather color to make a good roasting duck. Some claim that the buff colored feathers are easier to pluck than the white Pekin feathers.

The Crested is considered a dual-purpose breed of domestic duck.  Ducklings are quick to mature and they lay a good amount of eggs yearly.  The exact origin is unknown, but they are believed to have been around since before the 1600s as they were portrayed in Dutch painting from the 17th Century. They make good pets and are mainly used for ornamental and exhibition purposes.

The Indian Runner stands erect and rather than waddling, they run.  Runners do not fly and rarely form nests to incubate their own eggs. They often drop their eggs wherever they are - standing, walking, or running. Generally preoccupied foraging in grassy meadows for worms, slugs, even catching flies.

The Magpie is originally from Britain and was first bred after World War 1, but their exact ancestry has yet to be entirely discovered. Breeding documentation dates back to the 1920s, and it has been said that their origin may have included the Indian Runner. Magpies were first exported to the United States in 1963. Today, Magpies are commonly raised for showing, although they were initially bred as commercial utility birds for eggs and meat as their egg production is high and their breast feathers are white, so the carcass plucks clean.
